Reclaim an Animal to a Verified Owner or Custodian

Reclaim checks release eligibility and ownership before returning an animal. A historical relationship or selected person alone does not prove current ownership or lawful custody.

Before you beginOpen Movements & Outcomes → Reclaims. Have approved identity and ownership evidence, current compliance information, and required release paperwork available.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Select an animal currently in custody and Start Reclaim, or resume a draft in Recent Reclaim Workflows.
  2. At Eligibility, review active restrictions, ownership warnings, rabies and licensing warnings, and boarding-day context. Use Refresh when the underlying record was updated.
  3. At Owner / Custodian Verification, select the reclaiming person or use Add Person. Open the person record and review recorded identification and proof information.
  4. Document how identity and ownership or lawful custody were verified. Include a legitimate exception or supervisor authorization when applicable under agency policy.
  5. Review Reclaim Financials. Boarding days are used when the boarding fee is added or required; they do not by themselves create a charge. Review all relevant configured fees.
  6. Complete payment or an authorized fee correction when required, then intentionally mark the financial step reviewed.
  7. Generate or open the reclaim paperwork, review its content and required signers, and complete the document requirements before marking the step reviewed.
  8. Use Final Review to confirm eligibility remains current, the person is verified, and financial and document requirements are met. Complete the reclaim only when release is authorized.
  9. Review the completed outcome, custody state, receipt, and final release documents. When using a public reclaim link, share it only with the intended recipient through the approved process.
